Isabela is the largest island in the archipelago. A stay around Puerto Villamil can bring a different rhythm to a Galápagos journey, provided the transfer days and activities fit comfortably.
An island to experience at ground level
Galápagos Conservancy describes Isabela as a large volcanic island and identifies Puerto Villamil as its main settlement. Land-based visitors should distinguish experiences near their accommodation from distant places reached on a vessel itinerary. Being on Isabela does not mean every part of the island is accessible from your hotel.
Let the activity shape the day
Before selecting a volcanic-landscape walk or a marine outing, ask about the meeting point, surface underfoot, expected exertion, guide requirements and time away from town. Describe your group honestly. A traveler who enjoys a short coastal walk may want a very different day from someone seeking a longer hike. Ask the operator to explain weather-related alternatives.
Protect the transfer days
Ask which transport option actually operates for your dates and how luggage, dock transfers and hotel check-in connect. Avoid placing a non-refundable activity immediately after a tight connection. If your return to the mainland is essential, discuss a sensible buffer with KPG before choosing the last island night.
Plan for meals away from your base
An early start may require breakfast before normal service or a packed meal. Discuss drinking water, food handling and a suitable place to keep the day’s provisions with your provider. When meals come from another location, confirm that the proposed product and transport comply with ABG requirements; a kosher label does not establish permission to enter the islands.
Choose a reason to add Isabela
Add the island because its landscape and pace suit your interests, not because a three-island route sounds more complete. Ask KPG for two comparable proposals: one with fewer transfers and one including Isabela. Compare usable time, accommodation changes and the confirmed experiences in each version.
Your planning checklist
- Describe walking ability and comfort on small boats.
- Confirm the actual transport route and baggage conditions.
- Leave space between transfers and paid excursions.
- Agree on early meals and a contingency if transport changes.
Questions travelers ask
Can every Isabela visitor site be reached from Puerto Villamil?
No. Access depends on the particular site, permitted activity and transport. Ask for the exact location and access plan.
Can I add Isabela to a short trip?
Possibly, but compare the usable time after transfers with a simpler itinerary before deciding.
BEFORE YOU GO
A better journey starts with better questions.
Get to know the islands, compare travel styles and connect the food and Shabbat plan before requesting your personal itinerary.

Galápagos cruise or island hopping? Compare the trip you will actually take
Choose between a vessel itinerary and island-based accommodation by comparing the actual route, not the label. The right format depends on the experiences, pace and practical arrangements that matter to your party.
